It’s always reassuring to see something positive resulting from tragedy, such as the 2010 fire that destroyed the landmark Downtown Mount Vernon S. S. Kresge Building at the corner of Gambier and South Main Streets. Construction crews today were pouring the curbs that are beginning to delineate the Buchwald Center Plaza and  adjacent parking area. The Community Foundation was pleased last April to award grants totaling $50,000 for the project, which is certain to enhance the evolving South Main Street cityscape and provide another fine venue for civic events in our central business district. Kudos to departing MVNU President Dr. Daniel Martin, not only for creating an appealing new north facade of the Buchwald Center, but also for envisioning much more than just a convenient parking facility for its downtown campus. We’re eager to watch the project, designed by Shremshock Architects, continue to take shape.
